Shihō-sashi is a four-way joint and one of the most complex types of wood joinery. It involves connecting horizontal members to a single post from all four sides, combining straight (tsugite) and angled (shikuchi) techniques, each with its own joint or fitting. Due to the significant reduction in the cross-section of the post, this method is rarely used. However, in cases when a central post must support horizontal beams or braces – such as jabbing headers (sashi-gamoi) or bottom plate beams (ashi-gatame) – at the same height in a grid-like layout, a thicker post is used to accommodate this structure.
